MY APPROACH
Why use engineered in the name? In part because of my background, in part because of my methodology in providing solutions, and in part because of my approach when working with clients.
To many, a sales/use tax consultant with a background in engineering seems odd, and while admittedly my professional experience and overall career path has been far from normal, the transition into sales/use tax was actually quite seamless. For most tax matters people generally think of accounting, but sales/use tax is a very niche focus. In fact, most accounting firms don’t offer sales/use tax help or guidance for a very simple reason - it's not their core business and it’s not economically feasible to have an in-house expert to keep up with the myriad of laws that affect each industry and vary by state.
The traits and mindset that originally led me to engineering, along with additional skills I developed during my professional experience as an engineer, have translated very well into my practice of sales/use tax consulting. Having worked in product design in the automotive industry which undergoes rigorous testing, the process of root cause analysis is ingrained in my practice today. This approach allows me to filter through the details, dissect complex matters, and decipher tax laws and rulings. When working on any client engagement, and particularly when reviewing and applying sales/use tax laws, I am extremely detail-oriented. Something as simple as the placement of a comma or the use of “and” v. “or” can change the outcome or answer. I am conservative, meticulous, and persistent in my methods and my determinations are always based on facts and available information.
I believe that we should work together to find the solution that is appropriate for your business. Leveraging knowledge and prior experience is critical in providing efficient and cost effective results but the exact needs of your business will likely never mirror those of another. I approach each engagement without any predefined outcomes. Only after an introductory call or meeting do we determine the suggested projects, scope of my involvement, and overall approach which is tailored to your specific needs and budget.
